Sept 18, 2008 -- John Paff, Somerset, New Jersey
In 2007, the New Jersey Supreme Court held that citizens have a common law right to videotape meetings of public bodies provided that the videotaping does not disrupt the meeting.
Earlier this month, some citizens in Springfield Township (Union County) were prevented from videotaping their local school board meetings. The school board felt that it had the right not only to ensure that the videotaping was not disruptive, but to also grant or deny "approval" to any citizen who wished to videotape.
The denial resulted in an exchange of correspondence between Michael L. Prigoff, the attorney for the citizens, and Vito A. Gagliardi, Jr., the attorney for the school board. The correspondence, which I believe will be helpful to others who have met resistance when they've attempted to videotape public meetings, is at http://www.lpcnj.org/OGTF/SpringfieldVideoTape.pdf
